Saturn, heeding a prophecy that one of his sons would overthrow him, ate all his children
as soon as they were born. His wife hid Jupiter the moment he was born and
offered Saturn a large stone wrapped in swaddling clothes in his place.
As predicted by the oracle, once Jupiter was old enough, he set about punishing
his father, taking steps to see that Saturn was given a draught which made him
vomit up all the children he had swallowed. Conquered by his son, Saturn
was cast out of the sky into the depths of the Universe. Then came the
war with the Titans, who wished to re-conquer the kingdom. This war continued
for years and years until Jupiter in his anger hurled thunder and lightening
down from the heights of heaven until the Titans were finally conquered and
cast into the depths of the earth. In Roman mythology, Saturn is the god of
agriculture. The associated Greek god was Cronus. Cronus (known as Saturn in
Roman mythology) was always afraid that his kids would overthrow him so he
ate them and when Rhea his wife had their last child, Zeus, she tricked
Cronus into eating a rock instead of Zeus. Like Saturn, he was afraid,
and Zeus overthrew him with the help from his sisters and brothers.
